Advanced Particle Physics Volume I: Particles, Fields, and Quantum Electrodynamics $99.63 Helping readers understand the complicated laws of nature, Advanced Particle Physics Volume I: Particles, Fields, and Quantum Electrodynamics explains the calculations, experimental procedures, and measuring methods of particle physics. It also describes modern physics devices, including accelerators, elementary particle detectors, and neutrino telescopes. The book first introduces the mathematical basis of modern quantum field theory. It presents the most pertinent information on group theory, proves Noether’s theorem, and determines the major motion integrals connected with both space and internal symmetry. The second part on fundamental interactions and their unifications discusses the main theoretical preconditions and experiments that allow for matter structure to be established at the quark-lepton level. In the third part, the author investigates the secondary quantized theories of free fields with spin 0, 1/2, and 1, with particular emphasis on the neutrino field. The final part focuses on quantum electrodynamics, the first successfully operating quantum field theory. Along with different renormalization schemes of quantum field theory, the author covers the calculation methods for polarized and unpolarized particles, with and without inclusion of radiative corrections. Each part in this volume contains problems to help readers master the calculation techniques and generalize the results obtained. To improve understanding of the computation procedures in quantum field theory, the majority of the calculations have been performed without dropping complex intermediate steps. |

Applying numerical relativity to gravitational wave astronomy. $69 General relativity predicts the existence of gravitational waves produced by the motion of massive objects. The inspiral, merger, and ringdown of black hole binaries is expected to be one of the brightest sources in the gravitational wave sky. Interferometric detectors, such as the current ground-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the future space-based Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), measure the influx of gravitational radiation from the whole sky. Each physical process that emits gravitational radiation will have a unique waveform, and prior knowledge of these waveforms is needed to distinguish a signal from the noise inherent in the interferometer. In the strong field regime of the merger, only numerical relativity, which solves the full set of Einstein’s equations numerically, has been able to provide accurate waveforms. We present a comprehensive study of the nonspinning portion of parameter space for which we have generated accurate simulations of the late inspiral through merger and ringdown, and a comparison of those results with predictions from the adiabatic Taylor-expanded post-Newtonian (PN) and effective-one-body (EOB) PN approximations. We then focus on data analysis questions using the equal-mass nonspinning as well as the 2:1, 4:1, and 6:1 mass ratio nonspinning black hole binary (BHB) waveforms. We construct a full waveform by combining our results from numerical relativity with a highly accurate Taylor PN approximation, and use it to calculate signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for several detectors. We measure the mass ratio scaling of the waveform amplitude through the inspiral and merger, and compare our observations with predictions from PN. Lastly, we turn our focus to parameter estimation with LISA, and investigate the increased accuracy with which parameters can be measured by including both the merger and inspiral waveforms, compared to estimates without numerical waveforms which can only |

Black Hat Physical Device Security: Exploiting Hardware and Software $12.63 Black Hat, Inc. is the premier, worldwide provider of security training, consulting, and conferences. In this book the Black Hat experts show readers the types of attacks that can be done to physical devices such as motion detectors, video monitoring and closed circuit systems, authentication systems, thumbprint and voice print devices, retina scans, and more. The Black Hat Briefings held every year in Las Vegas, Washington DC, Amsterdam, and Singapore continually expose the greatest threats to cyber security and provide IT mind leaders with ground breaking defensive techniques. There are no books that show security and networking professionals how to protect physical security devices. This unique book provides step-by-step instructions for assessing the vulnerability of a security device such as a retina scanner, seeing how it might be compromised, and taking protective measures. The book covers the actual device as well as the software that runs it. By way of example, a thumbprint scanner that allows the thumbprint to remain on the glass from the last person could be bypassed by pressing a “gummy bear” piece of candy against the glass so that the scan works against the last thumbprint that was used on the device. This is a simple example of an attack against a physical authentication system |

Excerpt: Cube Cube is a 1997 Canadian psychological thriller directed by Vincenzo Natali . The film was a successful product of the Canadian Film Centre ’s First Feature Project. Despite its low budget, the film achieved moderate commercial success and has acquired cult status . Much of the film’s appeal lies in its surreal, Kafkaesque settings no extensive attempt is made to explain what the cube in which the characters are confined is, why it is created, or how the “inmates” were selected. Although the world “outside” is referred to, it is presented in an extremely abstract fashion either a dark void or a bright white light. Plot summary The film opens with a man waking up in a cube-shaped room with six hatch doors, one at the center of each wall, one on the ceiling and one on the floor. He begins to open doors and looks in to find rooms that differ from the one he is in only by color. He goes into an amber colored room and suddenly gets cut into large cubes by a metal grill that goes through him, which comes into view and folds up into the ceiling. In another room Quentin, Worth, Holloway, Rennes and Leaven come together. None of them know where they are, how they got there, or why they are there, so they decide to try and find a way out together. Quentin already knows that some rooms contain traps. He initially assumes that the rooms contain motion detectors , so he |

Equations of Motion in General Relativity $98.5 The problem of motion of extended bodies in General Relativity is notorious for its analytical difficulty, but at the same time highly relevant for comparison of theoretical predictions with modern precision measurements in relativistic astrophysics and cosmology. Its one of the most important topics in General Relativity and its application to astrophysics.Equations of Motion in General Relativity focuses attention on two aspects of equations of motion in general relativity: the motion of extended bodies (stars) and the motion of small black holes. The objective is to offer a guide to prospective researchers into these areas of general relativity and to point out open questions and topics that are ripe for further development. It is over forty years since a text on this subject was published and in that time the research area of equations of motion in general relativity has undergone extraordinary development, stimulated by the discovery of the binary neutron star PSR 1913+16 in 1974 (which was the first isolated gravitating system found in which general relativity plays a fundamental role in describing theoretically its evolution), and more recently by the advent of kilometre size interferometric gravitational wave detectors which are expected to detect gravitational waves produced by coalescing binary neutron stars. |
