How to set a Motion Sensor Light to turn on with a switch or the sensor?
I have a shed that is used as a party area. I did have just normal flood lights on it for when we are out there. However my shed was just broken into and I had about $2300 in tools stolen. So I have install Motion Sensor Lights from Lowes. Here is my issue, now when we are out there if some one is not in the sensor range the light will shut off. What I want to do is set the light up to turn on via a switch and stay on while simultaneously have the motion sensor be able to turn the light on when the switch is off. There are two lights I want to do this with, one is a single-pole switch. The other is a 3-way. The 3-way is run as such Switch to Switch to Light. Thank you for your help.
Ian. It’s not my intention to be rude or embarrass you, but if you were to Read The Manual you would find the answer to your question.
Surely you read them when you installed the lights in order to set the range and width of the sensor as well as the duration of the on time? Right after that came the part about “manual override” which is what you are wanting to do.
Some day you will need to know what to do if the lights stay on during he day or fail to come on at night. So, I suggest you keep them (the instructions) where you can find them easily.
Now then, some additional information about motion lights not found in user manuals:
They are VERY susceptible to voltage spikes/surges. The most common reason for failure.
A common life span for these kinds of lights is about 5 years, although I have seen them last 7-8 years. Maybe more.
If you should replace a bulb and it doesn’t work try lifting the tab in the bottom of the socket just a little so that it makes contact with the bottom of the new bulb.
P.S. It is entirely possible that someone you know broke into your shed. Making unannounced visits to “friends” houses under the guise of borrowing a tool (or getting a tool you lent them) might reveal the culprit. It worked for a friend of mine. One of his “buddies” got real nervous when he showed up wanting to get tool back, one thing lead to another and the truth came out.
