Sharpo Brings Dinner Theater To MWR
Sharpo is most famous in Los Angeles for interactive dinner theater shows like their highly acclaimed murder mystery, and their courtroom comedy, Dinner Court. They regularly take their shows on the road from LA to provide this exciting brand of entertainment to the service men and women on base in California through the MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation). After several seasons at the Mirage Club at El Centro Naval Air Facility, San Diego Naval Base, and China Lake, Ralph Ramsey, who heads up the MWR at El Centro, suggested a change to a more traditional dinner theater show to satisfy repeat customers. He first suggested Neil Simon. "Any Neil Simon play", recalls Eric Sharp, producer/actor at Sharpo.com. "I had to remind Ralph that while we wanted very much to continue bringing dinner theater to El Centro, the prospect of rehearsing a full length play for weeks to do one performance was going to be a difficult thing to ask of the talent who was busy performing regularly in the Murder Mystery shows. Also, many of our players are constantly auditioning or performing in TV and films so adding a full rehearsal schedule to their already busy lives was not a very attractive proposition."
Eric, who is known for his extraodordinary memory, suggested Woody Allen's "Play It Again Sam". He had done the play 20 years earlier at the Kobe Dinner Theater in Lakewood,New Jersey. The Asbury Park Press review said that Woody Allen couldn't have done it better himself. Even though it had been 20 years since he did the play, he knew the lines would come back to him. This way, he could rehearse the other cast members and have a 'head start' on the production. Eric's wife and partner at Sharpo Inc, Nora would play the part of Linda, his love interest in the play. This way they could rehearse whenever they got a free second, which wasn't very often since their baby, Benjamin, was only 6 months old at the time. The actors all poured their hearts into the production, knowing these sacrifices were very small in comparison to those made by our service men and women.
He was right, he remembered his part well. The cast was rounded out with Duffy Hudson as a dead on Bogart and the brilliant comedic actress, Kerri Schmidle. Duffy has made a real name for himself playing Edgar Allan Poe in his one man show, "Shadow Of The Raven" and Kerri studied at the prestigious "Second City".
The play, produced by special arrangement with Samuel French went up on February 14th, 2009 at El Centro's Mirage Club and it was a smash hit. "The play is so well written. Their are laughs non-stop for 90 minutes."
Since then, Sharpo and Company have brought the play to the San Diego base and next up is China Lake. Of course, because it was so successful, Ralph at El Cento has asked for 4 more plays to be produced by Sharpo over the next year, which means lots of rehearsal for very few performances in between the 200 plus interactive theater events they produce each year.
