The Hamptons or the Jersey Shore?
Summer time is here. Fourth of July weekend upon us. Its in full swing in the Hamptons. On the beaches, surfers and piping plovers vie for sand space, and at the Bridgehampton Polo Club the games have begun. In East Hampton, the fresh lobster salad is selling briskly at $60 a pound. Every weekend, the parade of cars from the city snags horribly in Watermill. And renters have returned in large numbers to snap up houses from Southampton to Montauk. Same at the Jersey Shore.
Having summered at both since I was 2 I have some observations I would like to share. Sharing is fun isnt it? As long as its me sharing and you listening or in this case reading. If its you sharing then my mind goes all Homer Simpson as there is nothing you could possibly tell me that could hold my interest. I digress.
Well, it all started in the summer of 63 going to Atlantic City N.J. to the Mayflower Hotel. Each summer we stayed at the same hotel even the same room and we knew all the staff. This was a remarkeable place as it sat on the boardwalk directly accross from a penny arcade, next to which was Caseys, the best burgers, hot dogs french fries and Pepsi a boy could ask for. Even more special was that diretly next to Caseys was the beach and what a beautiful beach it was. Under the boardwalk we would find crabs. In the sand crabs not the oh my God I cant believe I was with that pig crabs. My second digression, please forgive me.
I learned to swim in the hotel pool where it had a retractable roof that would close on rainy days. i walked onto the diving board, age 3 and went to jump off, my mother screamed in horror and the lifeguard said not to worry, it would help me learn. Splash and a quick doggie paddle to the side, success.
Fast forward to 1974 when my older brother, (do they come in any other form?) bought some property in the Hamptons and porceeded to build a modest house about 15 miles from the beach. You need to remember I am now 13 and have no access to transportation. No penny arcade, no rides, no salt water taffy store that gave me free samples each night. Just a house with no cable, no central air, no pool, and an older brother that would rather have a minor car accident then look accross the room and see me sitting in the living room. Summer is over.
For those of you who havent ventured to the Hamptons its like this, the Hamton Bays is Yonkers on the beach. South and East Hampton is the Mercedes/Ferrari crowd and is filled with rich successful impatient pushy arrogant people which makes the weekend just as tense as the work week.
Ok, but what about the beaches? The Hamptons beaches from the Bays all the way out to Montauk is all beach break and cold right up to Labor Day. Beach break worse then Nam. If you attempt to ride a wave you find yourself upside down in the sand with a broken neck. You will be in so much pain you wish you were in Nam drinking paddy water tied up in a bamboo cage. I am a swimmer and I need to ride in the waves and some warm water wouldnt hurt either.
This brings me to the point of this piece, the Jersey Shore is by far the more relaxing family fun place to be for this guy. The beaches are superb for relaxing and body surfing and you can ride wave after wave a hundred feet and feel that floating feeling that brings you back to boyhood. Plus when I travel I want to be the only rich successful impatient pushy arrogant guy and I dont need anyone else mucking it up. By the way, you served me water in a wine glass, I want my water in a water glass please. I mean is that too much to ask, get me the manager. Dont these people ever give up?
